Timber knots exude resin over the years and if not treated prior to painting they will cause the paint to discolour and crack. Patent Knotting is the most widely used, but White Knotting is preferred for use under white or pastel coloured paints. Knottings are based on shellac, similar in formulation to French Polishes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKnotting may be applied to both old and new timber. (Even very old timber can continue to exude sap).
